Purpose
To provide students with insight into Icelandic medieval literature, as well as the capacity to understand them in their historical context
Content
Emphasis: This course examines a number of key texts in Norse medieval literature, their origin, form and style and, in particular, the concepts they give rise to. All students should read Hávamál, Laksdøla and Grettis søga, but other texts will be introduced as the course progresses (or distributed in advance in PDF format). These texts will be used to discuss the following topics: • Oral and written culture • History and poetry • Paganism and Christianity • Nature and the supernatural • Foreign models • Men and women
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures and student presentations. Students are required to prepare handouts on clearly defined topics
