Purpose
The course aims to introduce students to the basic terminology of language contact research and bilingualism. The course will focus on the situation of Faroese-Danish language contact and bilingualism. For this purpose material from the FADAC (Faroese-Danish Corpus) in Hamburg will be used.
Content
We will discuss different formula developed in research on language contact and bilingualism. We will look at phenomena such as language dominance, convergence, code switching and nonce borrowings. In addition, we will also touch on bilingual individuals’ vocabulary and bilingual society.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, assignments, presentations.
Assessment method
Written 6-hour exam. Study aids permitted. Marks awarded in accordance with the marking scale in force.
