Introduction to Finnish, individual studies (MA)

Prerequisites
The student must have passed the BA in Faroese or have equivalent skills (cf. the study guide).
Purpose
The aim of this course is to give the student an understanding of the basic similarities and differences between Finnish and the Nordic languages as well as theoretical knowledge of the Finnish language’s grammatical structure and history.
Content
The student is introduced to the grammar and structure of the Finnish language through lectures, reading and listening exercises and individual studying. The lectures and exercises give the student a basic knowledge of the language, while the student can improve his knowledge of the grammatical structure through individual studying.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course consists of an intensive teaching module of 15 hours held by a guesting teacher. The teaching mainly consists of lectures, exercises and group work. The rest of the course will be individual studies where the students immerses himself in the language.
Learning outcomes
The student can: • account for the basic grammar and structure of the Finnish language. • account for and discuss the basic similarities and differences between Finnish and the Nordic languages based on individual studies. • read and analyze simple texts in Finnish and account for their content and structure.
Assessment method
The course will end with a 20 minutes oral presentation in Faroese or Danish, where the student accounts for similarities and differences betweek Finnish and the Nordic languages. The presentation is to be supported by a synopsis of 3-5 pages.
