Prerequisites
Students must have completed the BA in Faroese.
Purpose
To provide students with a foundation in the study of place names today and throughout history.
Content
This course will inform students about concepts and terminology in the field of place name studies. The course will include examination of the Faroese Place Name Corpus, of sources used in place name studies and of place name research.
Learning and teaching approaches
The duration of the course is three hours a week over one semester. The approaches used are class-based teaching and student presentations.
Learning outcomes
Once the course has been completed, successful students can demonstrate that they have acquired in-depth knowledge about place name theory and the ability to: • explain concepts and terminology in place name studies thoroughly • categorise place names thoroughly • explain Faroese place name sources • explain the process of gathering Faroese place names • describe Faroese place name research

Six-hour written examination.
