1448.17 - Field Research (MA)

Course number
1448.17
Title
Field Research (MA)
ECTS
10
Prerequisites
The students must have completed a BA in Faroese or comparable.
Purpose
The students learn • to independently make use of and evaluate their competences in a societal context by taking on tasks at a cultural institution and • from this to think analytically about how theoretical, scholarly knowledge on language and/or literature, which is part of their course material, bears out in practice.
Content
The field research consists of work at a cultural institution and a written assignment. The students’ time spent at the cultural institution should correspond to seven workweeks. The cultural institution along with a written statement of the research objective must be approved by a supervisor, who is among the department’s scientific staff, and by the programme director. The deadline for approval is the same as the deadline for choosing other modules. It is important that the student takes responsibility for showing interest in the field research by submitting proposals for the research objective and in consultation with the supervisor contacting the cultural institution. The assignment is evaluated with an emphasis on the students’ ability to analyse a cultural institution regarding e.g. historical conditions, purpose, cultural/artistic activities, internal organisation, qualifications of the staff or other factors relevant to the field research. One of the main questions of the assignment should be how the student has used his/hers academic/scientific competences at the cultural institution. The student attains the theoretical and methodological foundation by reading relevant materials regarding the field research and from other modules on language and literature offered by the department.
Learning and teaching approaches
The module is divided into work at a cultural institution and supervisor guidance. Guidance is given at the start of the field research, at the middle, and at the end. Other than this, it is up to the student and the supervisor to arrange appointments amongst themselves. The student must, as part of the field research, analyse and regularly write down observations in a document (logbook), which the supervisor and the student then use as a basis for the guidance, when the field research approaches its conclusion and the assignment is to be written.
Learning outcomes
The students have learned: • to independently make use of their academic competences by taking on tasks at a cultural institution • to describe and evaluate their field of research and their academic/scientific competences in a societal context • to think analytically about how scientific and theoretical knowledge may be applied to practical work • to procure materials and to formulate an objective on which to base field research • based on the formulation and relevant methodology to describe and analyse a cultural institution and their own role at that institution • to communicate their experiences and their research results in a written assignment • to present and discuss their research results in an oral presentation
Assessment method
Written 15-20-page assignment with a 30-minute oral presentation.

Bibliography
The bibliography must be about 800 pages and is dependent on the subject of the field research. A reasonable balance must be struck between general theoretical and subject related literature.
