Realism and Poetry in the Work of Heðin Brú (MA)

Prerequisites
BA in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
To provide an outline of the work by Heðin Brú, point out the correlations between realistic and lyric prose in his novels and short stories and discuss his position in Faroese and Nordic literature and culture.
Content
To analyse novels and short stories by Heðin Brú and works by other authors; discuss theories about realism and romanticism and how Brú’s work has been received by literary criticism and the public.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teacher’s and students’ presentations with emphasize on how to present and discuss presentations.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate to: • analyse texts by Heðin Brú • explain the course of his works • describe the relations between his work and Faroese, Nordic and other literatures • describe theories about realism and poetry and about literary genres • apply the studied concepts in analyses of texts by Heðin Brú • critically reflect on scholarly readings of Heðin Brú
Assessment method
Combined exam with question and an oral presentation. The students get 3 days to prepare an oral presentation (30 min.) with materials about a prepared topic.

Will be presented at the beginning of the course. Minimum readings: Fastatøkur, Feðgar á ferð and short stories from Fjallaskugggin, Flókatrøll og Búravnurin og Tobacco Road eftir Erskine Caldwell.
