BA in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
Learn to understand theories about gender and to use them in literary analyses.
Content
Reading of texts about gender by Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler, Toril Moi, Pierre Bourdieu, R. Connell, Jørgen Lorentzen and others. The theories are meant to introduce the students to how masculinity and feminity are formed in selected works of Faroese authors as Regin í Líð, Heðin Brú, William Heinesen, Jóhonnu Maria Skylv Hansen, Andrea Reinert, Oddvør Johansen, Carl Jóhan Jensen, Jóanes Nielsen, Tórodd Poulsen, Bergtóra Hanusardóttir og Katrin Ottarsdóttir.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teacher’s lectures and students’ papers and presentation skills.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate how to: • independently and scholarly analyse literary texts • describe Faroese literary history from a gender perspective • explain relevant gender theory concepts • apply relevant concepts in analyses of gender in selected literary texts • critically reflect about literary gender analyses
Assessment method
Combined exam with question and an oral presentation. The students get 3 days to prepare an oral presentation (30 min.) with materials about a given topic.
