Prerequisites
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with adequate component of law.
Purpose
The objective of the course is to give the student an insight into EU law and EU institutions with a particular emphasis on those areas of EU law that are most relevant for the Faroe Islands as a trading partner of the EU. Among them are the four freedoms and the particular agreements entered into between the EU and the Faroe Islands.
Content
The topics covered by the course will be: - The background and history of the EU. - The treaties of the EU and how they have developed over time. - The Danish constitution and the legal nature of the EU. - The institutions of the EU and their role: European Council, Council of Ministers, European Commission, European Parliament, and the European Court of Justice. - EU law making and sources of law - Secondary legislation, such as regulations and directives. General principles of law. - The special treaties entered into between the EU and the Faroe Islands. - The relationship between EU law and national law, both in general, but also, and especially, EU law and Faroese law. - The four freedoms of the single market. - The EEA and its relationship with the EU. - The European Court of Justice: Its interpretive process and writing style. Selected cases.
Learning and teaching approaches
Approx. 40 hours of student time confrontation. The teaching consists of lectures, critical discussions, work in groups, student presentations and other forms of active student centered learning.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, the students shall be able to: - Describe the main concepts and sources of EU law. - Describe the EU’s institutions and their role. -Assess legal issues concerning the Faroe Islands interaction with the EU. - Analyze sources of law and interpretive methods in case law of the European Court of Justice and the importance of the case law to the four freedoms of the European single marked. - Identify relevant legal issues and facts in different contexts. - Critically assess, evaluate and present different solutions for various types of legal matters. - Present and formulate knowledge and arguments in a correct manner both orally and in writing.
Assessment method
A multiple choice exam in the middle of the course will count for 25% of the grade, and a written 48 hours take home exam at the end of the course will count for 75 % of the grade. A precondition for passing the overall course is that the student has passed both exam components.

Bibliography
The basic textbook is Ulla Neergaard & Ruth Nielsen, EU-Law, 8th ed., Karnov Group, 2020 (or the latest edition). Additional course materials, as academic articles, judgments, EU related legal texts and agreements etc., will be available prior to teaching on the Moodle network.
