Purpose
The purpose of the master’s dissertation in health sciences is for students to develop independent competencies in using theories and methods gained in their master’s course. They will show this by doing research based in a research question they themselves have formulated and which is of both professional and societal importance
Content
Students write a master’s dissertation. Students may choose to write a typical dissertation or a scientific paper – for more information, see exam requirements. The course begins with a joint introduction on processing and protecting data, organising research, electronic reference systems, etc. Students can organise workshops in which lecturers participate as their workload allows.
Learning and teaching approaches
The process of writing a dissertation; working independently on a project, in which the student receives supervision; potential presentations and participation in workshops organised by students.
Learning outcomes
On completing their dissertation, the student must be able to: • describe health sciences as an interdisciplinary field of study • analyse the interaction between social issues and health • analyse main issues and challenges in health sciences in international and national contexts • conduct interdisciplinary work based in a research question of a high academic level that corresponds to what is expected of a master’s student • show competencies in delineating an issue from several viewpoints, and analysing and presenting significant knowledge in her or his chosen subject and field of study • evaluate results of scientific research in health • use relevant theories and methods in health sciences and in the particular field of his or her project; analyse selected materials by using a relevant method; produce and interpret results; compare her or his own result with other relevant research; come to a conclusion based in his or her own research and set the results into a greater perspective.
