Completion of the 1st semester in West Nordic Studies or equivalent qualifications. The practice learning workplace must have at least two full-time employees. The practice learning workplace could be a company, an organisation, an administration, a service firm, or a manufacturing business. The practice learning period must incorporate content of tangible academic relevance, and therefore an agreement with the workplace must be approved by the Programme Director or the supervisor.

The aim of practice learning is to broaden the academic work skills of the student and additionally create a connection between the programme and the labour market. This should encompass: • Making the students qualified for the jobs in the field or theme they are working on in West Nordic Studies by applying theoretical knowledge in practice. • Creating a connection between the university education and the Faroese or international labour market, including creating networks and contacts within the field for each individual student. • Nurturing the analytical skills of the student through a practically-oriented and problem-based project. • Scientific workflow through a practically-oriented and problem-based project, where supervision and seminars aid this development.

The work placement period follows the academic year, and begins at either about 1 September and ends at 1 January, or at about 1 February and ends at about 1 June. These time periods are important for ensuring that the work placement period also follows the academic year.

The Work at the Department of History and Social Sciences (DHSS) Ten days of the work placement period have been allocated to being present at the place of education. Attendance is compulsory for these days. A practice learning report will be made, i.e. an academic report based on the practice learning experience. The work at DHSS entails academic assistance of the practice learning period work and with the practice learning report. This will be arranged in the form of, for instance, presentations with critical feedback and debate, seminars, and/or lectures. Students are required to present their work and to provide peer review of others’ work. Individual supervision can be provided after agreement with the Programme Director. In case of work placement abroad, special arrangements will be made as to how this will be organised (e.g. attendance via Skype or other means of communication). Work at the Practice Learning Workplace The practice learning work is based on a joint agreement between DHSS, the practice learning workplace, and the student. The objective of the agreement is to ensure that the student is doing academically relevant work by insight/assignments in the daily work of the place.

Based on a practice learning report, at the end of the practice learning period, the student will be able to: • Reflect on the practical experience the student has acquired in the practice learning period, including significant challenges and experiences from an academic point of view. • Critically reflect, in theory and practice, in regards to the field of work or the job assignments of the student at the practice learning workplace. • Scientifically reflect on own practice learning experience with a basis in a problem-oriented approach and independent work. • Analyse the field of study of the student and their particular interests in a problem-oriented way, thereby eliciting new relevant knowledge.

Before the student may take his/her examination, he/she must have participated satisfactorily in the academic work at DHSS. This will be approved by the Programme Director or the supervisor. The assessment will be conducted with a basis in an overall assessment of the practice learning report and an oral examination. The practice learning report is customarily between 8,000 and 12,000 words long.

The bibliography is individual and must cover theories, concepts, and methods of relevance for practical academic work. The suggested number of pages is between 750 and 1,500 depending on the nature of the work. The bibliography should be in English.
