Purpose
The purpose of the theoretical essay is for students independently to analyze a theoretical theme related to governance in the West Nordic and/or Arctic regions. The purpose is to develop the students´ theoretical competences.
Content
The student selects a theme related to governance in the West Nordic and/or Arctic regions. The student searches for relevant academic literature and formulates a research question. Based on the research question and the literature, the student analyzes the selected theme and presents the result in an essay. The selected theme, research question and literature has to be approved by the teacher/program director. The student starts out by presenting the theme, research question and preliminary literature in no more than 1000 words. Before handing in the essay, the final list of literature needs to be approved.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course is an independent student study and consists of literature searches and academic work combined with teacher counselling sessions.
Learning outcomes
To be able to: • Identify a theme from a scientific/academic perspective • Formulate a research question • Construct an analysis by relevant theoretical constructions and concepts • Describe, discuss and critically evaluate the selected theoretical approaches in relation to the research question • Present the academic theoretical analysis in a written essay form
Assessment method
An accepted theme/research question/final literature and attendance to counselling sessions is a prerequisite for the final assessment. Final assessment is a written essay (5000 words).
