Purpose
The purpose of the research methodology and research design course is for students to individually develop a research design and to argue why a certain research design is suited for the selected research question. The purpose is to develop the students´ methodological competences.
Content
The student presents a research question related to governance and/or sustainability in the West Nordic and/or Arctic regions. Based on the research question and the course literature, the student develops a research design suited for investigating and answering the research question and conducts a methodological discussion of the course subjects in relation to the developed research design. The student presents the result in a written assignment.

• Conceptualisation
• Social research strategies
• Research design
• Data collection
• Analytical strategy
• Research ethics
The selected research question and selection of overall design must be approved by the teacher/program manager.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course is an independent student study combined with teacher counselling sessions.
Learning outcomes
To be able to:
• Present and motivate a research question
• Develop a research design and a strategy for data collection and data analysis
• To discuss relevant methodological questions in relation to the selected design
• Present the design and discussion in a clear and structured written assignment
Assessment method
An accepted research question and research design and attendance to counselling sessions is a prerequisite for the final assessment. Final assessment is a written essay (3000 words).
