Purpose
This course offers students a broad understanding of the themes of environment, climate, and sustainability. The course offers students an understanding of different theories and concepts related to these themes. Following from this, the course offers an understanding of management and governance theory, which in the course is related to the environmental themes. Hereby, the course seeks to integrate environmental themes and the governance aspect. The focus is directed at, how society deals with challenges related to environmental challenges.
Content
The course consists of four elements: 1. climate system and climate challenges, which focuses on the scientific explanations and drivers behind climate change, 2. Sustainability, which focuses on elements like sustainable development, environmental economics, and ecological modernization, 3. Management systems related to natural resources that may include examples, like for instance the administration of fishery resources in the Faroe Islands, and 4. Governance, where focus is directed on the linkage between different actors and institutions in problem solving and interest representation. Students will work with the different themes by combining the use of theories and empirical data, including reflecting on different methodological questions in order to train the ability to work out a research design.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course is a combination of teacher presentations, working group activity, and student presentations. In addition, course participants engage with relevant institutions and actors in society about case themes relevant for course themes.
