Jóan Pauli Joensen Honoured as Doctor Jubilaris at Lund University
At a grand academic ceremony at Lund University last week, former Rector of the University of the Faroe Islands, Jóan Pauli Joensen, was honoured for his lifelong academic career and achievements.
Amid top hats and laurel wreaths, a formal procession and celebration marked the conferment of degrees and honours upon 290 new doctors, 16 honorary doctors, and 48 doctores jubilares.
Jóan Pauli Joensen, former Rector of the University of the Faroe Islands and Adjunct Professor of Ethnology and Cultural History, received special recognition when he was ceremonially crowned with a laurel wreath as a Doctor Jubilaris.
“Accipe lauream, honnesti felisque laboris praemium,” proclaimed the master of ceremonies as Jóan Pauli Joensen bowed and received the wreath. The Latin phrase may be translated as: “Receive the laurel wreath as a reward for your honourable and successful work.”
The title conferred upon Joensen is Doctor Jubilaris—known in Swedish as jubeldoktor. This distinction is awarded to scholars who earned their doctoral degree at Lund University fifty years ago. As fifty years have now passed since Jóan Pauli Joensen received his doctorate there, he was honoured as a Doctor Jubilaris during this year’s ceremony.

We warmly congratulate Jóan Pauli Joensen on this distinguished and well-deserved recognition.
