Karin keynote speaker at EcoBalt 2025

Karin Habermehl-Cwirzen, who is an associate professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of the Faroe Islands, was one of the keynote speakers at the major scientific conference EcoBalt 2025, held in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The conference, which took place from 8 to 10 October, brought together researchers and professionals from Northern and Eastern Europe working with sustainability, environmental science, and green building materials.

EcoBalt is an international conference that is taken very seriously in this field, so their wish to have Karin Habermehl-Cwirzen deliver one of the keynote lectures reflects the growing importance of the research on sustainable materials at the University of the Faroe Islands.

As an associate professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, she presented the latest results of her research in the lecture.

These focus on Faroese basalt as a construction material and on the possibilities of recycling Faroese building materials, including old concrete.

In her lecture, she emphasized how high-energy ball milling can activate basalt and recycled concrete so they can be reused as binders in new concrete.
