PhD School established at the University

At the turn of the year, a PhD School was established at the University of the Faroe Islands.

The new unit will administer all PhD programmes at the University and provide clearer and improved frameworks for PhD students’ research training and study conditions.

According to Magni Mohr, Professor and Head of the PhD School, the initiative marks an important milestone that has been in preparation for several years. The structure of the PhD School is largely inspired by Nordic models, with additional input from the United Kingdom.

The PhD School offers three pathways: a standard three-year PhD programme, a four-year PhD position combined with teaching duties in strategic areas, and industrial PhDs in collaboration with Faroese companies or public institutions.

The number of PhD students at the University has increased from 19 in 2020 to 35 today, highlighting the growing need for a dedicated PhD School.

The establishment follows a recommendation made in 2022 by an external expert evaluation committee appointed by the Ministry of Children and Education.
