Public Meeting on the Future of Fisheries Management
How should fisheries be managed in a way that takes into account not only fish stocks, but also the economic and social consequences?
This will be the main topic of a public meeting at the Nordic House on Monday, 17 August, from 1–4 pm, held in connection with IIFET 2026.
The event is free of charge, everyone is welcome, and the meeting will be held in English.
At the meeting, Faroese and international experts and policymakers will discuss how science, economics, politics and industry considerations can work together in fisheries management.
Bárður á Steig Nielsen, Minister of Fisheries, will open the meeting. He will be followed by Daði Már Kristófersson from Iceland, who will discuss Iceland’s experience with fisheries management and the role of economic and social considerations.
Unn Laksá will present a Faroese perspective and discuss the balance between science, policy and industry in fisheries management. Erin Steiner from NOAA will share US experience of incorporating economic and social knowledge into fisheries advice, while Angela Munch will present the ICES perspective.
Different perspectives come together
The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Alan Haynie, General Secretary of ICES.
The panel is expected to include Daði Már Kristófersson, Angela Munch, Unn Laksá, Erin Steiner and Durita í Grótinum, Director of Faroe Islands Sustainable Fisheries.
The discussion will bring together different perspectives. What are the limits of biological advice? What role should economic and social considerations play? And how should these different factors be weighed when political decisions on fisheries are made?
The meeting will conclude with questions and discussion from the audience.
