Public seminar: How do we memorise music?
Join us for a fascinating public seminar at the University of the Faroe Islands on 20 May at 16:00, exploring a new and innovative method for memorising complex piano music.
Award-winning pianist and mathematician Dr Laura Farré Rozada will present her research at Kongshøll in Sjóvinnuhúsið in Tórshavn, combining lecture and live performance. Her work focuses on musical memory, performance psychology, and post-tonal music—a field where effective memorisation techniques are still lacking.
In this lecture-recital, she introduces Conceptual Simplification, a method developed in her 2024 PhD thesis. Drawing on mathematics and computer science, the method offers new ways to analyse, learn, and memorise challenging piano repertoire.
The event will feature musical examples from 20th- and 21st-century works, with a special focus on compositions by Faroese composer Sunleif Rasmussen.
Dr Farré Rozada has been named a “Rising Star” by BBC Music Magazine and is the recipient of the American Classical Young Musician Award 2022. She has released three acclaimed albums, toured internationally, and premiered over 100 works. She is also an experienced speaker, having lectured at universities and conferences worldwide.
Don’t miss this unique and inspiring event at Kongshøll – everyone is welcome!
