The University of the Faroe Islands to Analyse U.S. Arctic Policy
The Faroese Research Council has granted funding for an analytical report on the expansionist U.S. policy in the Arctic and its impact on the Danish Realm.
A research team led by the Faculty of History and Social Sciences at the University of the Faroe Islands has been awarded just under DKK 250,000 to examine and describe the threats posed by the U.S. government’s ambitions to assert control over Greenland, and the historical crisis this has sparked between Denmark and the United States.
The strained relationship between Denmark and the U.S. could have significant consequences for the Danish Realm and the relations between Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. At the same time as the U.S. President, Donald Trump, pressures the Danish government, demands for greater self-government are growing in both Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
The aim of the analytical report is to explore the expansionist U.S. policy in the Arctic, both historically and in the present, and to assess its potential implications for the unity of the Realm.
In addition to researchers from the University of the Faroe Islands, scholars from Denmark and Greenland will also take part in the project.
The project is led by Heini í Skorini, Associate Professor at the Faculty of History and Social Sciences at the University of the Faroe Islands.
The funding is provided through the research programme on foreign, security, and defence policy known as FASDiNA. The programme is funded by the Danish government and aims to strengthen knowledge on foreign affairs, security, and defence policy in the North Atlantic, and to promote research collaboration between the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Denmark in this field.
