UFI Gains Representation on the Academic Council of Island Innovation
The University of the Faroe Islands has been appointed a member of the Academic Council of Island Innovation.
Island Innovation is an international advisory and interest organisation working with innovation, sustainability, and development in island communities around the world.
The Briton James Ellsmoor, who took part in the Water Conference in the Faroe Islands in 2024, is the director of Island Innovation.
The organisation hosts conferences and meetings where politicians, advisors, researchers, and activists discuss the diverse challenges faced by island communities in their efforts to create sustainable societies.
Island Innovation also works to strengthen connections and collaboration between island communities in different parts of the world.
The annual digital conference, the Virtual Island Summit, is highly regarded.
Island Innovation will also participate in COP30, which will take place in Belém, Brazil, in November this year.
The Academic Council of Island Innovation consists of research institutions with expertise related to island communities. Around 30 institutions are currently represented on the council, including several universities with which the University of the Faroe Islands collaborates—such as the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) in Scotland and the University of Malta. The council produces reports on various topics, which can be found on Island Innovation’s website.
Firouz Gaini, Professor of Anthropology at the Department of History and Social Sciences at the University of the Faroe Islands, is the Faroese representative on the Academic Council.
