The University of the Faroe Islands has joined the other members of the European University Alliance EUNICoast in signing the Burgas Declaration, reaffirming their long-term commitment to cooperation.
The University of the Faroe Islands is a strategic member of EUNICoast, which has now set its course towards 2037.
Rector Martin Tvede Zachariasen, together with the other 12 rectors, has signed the Burgas Declaration, reaffirming their shared long-term commitment to strengthening cooperation in education, research, innovation and sustainable development.
The declaration was adopted at a meeting of the EUNICoast Board of Rectors in Burgas, Bulgaria, on 17 September 2026. In the declaration, the leaders of the 13 member universities affirm that EUNICoast is a permanent strategic alliance whose ambitions extend well beyond individual project periods and funding cycles.
A key element of the declaration is the approval of the EUNICoast Strategy 2026–2037, which sets the common direction for the alliance over the next decade. The strategy brings together cooperation in education, research and innovation.
The declaration also confirms EUNICoast's commitment to expanding cooperation with partners beyond Europe.
At the same meeting, the Board of Rectors also adopted a separate declaration on academic freedom and responsibility in the advancement of knowledge.
This declaration affirms that free and responsible research, institutional autonomy and open, evidence-based debate are essential foundations for trustworthy knowledge, democracy and public trust in universities.
By signing the declaration, the University of the Faroe Islands reaffirms its commitment to playing an active role in developing EUNICoast into a strong European University Alliance, with a particular focus on the future of coastal and island communities.
The University of the Faroe Islands has been a member of EUNICoast since 2024.
