Um verkætlanina sigur Turið – á enskum:

My research holds the title ‘Exploring the conflicting abortion values in the Faroe Islands: An ethnography’. Women on the Faroe Islands are well educated and hold high degrees. Young women migrate from the Faroe Islands to pursue a higher education, which also is the onset of the women-deficit issue on the islands. There is free access to reproductive health care and women and men protect themselves, reproductively speaking, equally as well as the other Nordic countries. Nonetheless, the Faroe Islands, in comparison to their neighbouring countries, have a restrictive abortion act, not allowing women to freely choose an abortion. There is a growing attention on abortion from a political level as well as an individual level, as the abortion act lies within the administration of family relations (Familjufyristing), which was transferred to the Faroese domain on the 29th of July 2018.

Taking abortion as the empirical point of departure, I want to explore women’s navigation in relation to abortion; how do they acquire knowledge, whom do they contact, what are their options and rights, how do they view themselves as autonomous women in the society?

I will also study the power dynamics and the processes in relation to women’s planned abortion. It is important to understand the position and authority of health care workers, especially general practitioners. How do they define their role? How do they practice or even interpret the law? The project takes a theoretical stance in critical feminist cultural research.
