Research Challenges of the Future Electric Power System

Abstract: The lecture will give a short overview of the challenges of electric power system the last 100+ years. It will highlight the importance of research for the development of the system and identify some areas that have been particularly important. A personal view of what research areas that will be most important for the future progress of the electric power system will also be given.

Bio: Göran Andersson is professor emeritus from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) where he was the head of the Power Systems Laboratory 2000 – 2016. His interest are in power system modelling, control, analysis, and dynamics. He is Fellow of IEEE and among his distinctions the 2016 IEEE PES Prabha S. Kundur Power System Dynamics and Control Award can be mentioned.

Klokkan 11:15: Thomas Ackermann, dr.:

Renewables and Island Power Systems - A personal review of world-wide experience

Abstract: What can we learn from renewable energy integration into island power systems? Why are the lessons so important for the future development of any power systems in the world? The presentation aims at providing a personal "lessons learned" on working with renewables and island power systems around the world for the last 25 years.

Bio: Thomas Ackermann is the founder and CEO of the renewable power system consulting company Energynautics. He has over 25 years of world-wide academic and consulting experience in the area of power system operation with focus on grid integration of renewables generation as well as electric vehicles. He is actively involved as lecturer at Universities and within capacity building courses in the dissemination of knowledge about the integration of renewable energies into existing power systems around the world. He holds a combined Degree in Mechanical Engineering & MBA from the TU Berlin, Germany, as well as a M.Sc. in Physics from University of Otago, New Zealand and a Ph.D. from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden."
