Innihald
This course is an off-spring of research in the political history of the Faroe Islands. The aim and content of the course will give the students an understanding of the emergence and development of Faroese politics in the first half of the 20th century. Students will be introduced to a variety of historical material and the latest research on the topic. Through work with historical material and contemporary cases, students will also discuss implications of this period on contemporary political discourse and the role political history plays for contemporary Faroese politics. The early 20th century saw the emergence of the major political institutions and dimensions, such as independent-versus-unionist and right-versus-left. These developments were reactions to changes in international relations, in particular the Great War and the Second World War, which affected the relations between Denmark and the Faroe Islands. It was in this context that the political institutions and the polarisation of Faroese politics emerged. The course will give the student a contextual and historical understanding of these developments in the Faroe Islands.
