Required core social sciences courses (completed 1 and 2 year) or equivalent qualifications. Required course on the third year of the Bachelor Degree in Social Analysis and Planning

The purpose is for students to acquire knowledge and understanding of the welfare society and the social sector, both in a theoretical and empirical context.

 Culture, identity, and the civil society, and the interaction between these and its importance for the welfare society.  The ‘third sector’, meaning non-profit and voluntary organisations, their importance and role in the societal development.  The interplay between structural changes in the society and social aspects, in relation to, for example, politics, economy and industry, and social integration.  Welfare, social organisation, and social work.

The course is based on the required course reading, which will be reviewed using presentations, discussion and exercises. Furthermore, students are required to write – individually or in a group – a problem-oriented project based on a social science subject. For the project, students must independently identify relevant literature, which will count towards the required course reading. A supervisor will be assigned to each project, who must also approve the choice of topic and research question. This project may be integrated with the project in the Social planning course.

The successful student will:  Be able to explain central theories in social science.  Be able to explain and elucidate research in welfare societies and social issues.  Be able to structure, discuss and communicate knowledge about social science issues.  Have acquired competence to independently problematize and define a problem statement, collect secondary data independently, as well as translate knowledge of theories/methods into practically applicable knowledge.

Oral examination based on the written project and the distributed bibliography.
