Prerequisites
High school C-level in chemistry, B-level in mathematics, and physics or equivalent.
Purpose
To introduce the principles of chemistry and the applications of chemistry in a modern society.
Content

Electronic configurations of atoms • Equilibria and kinetics. • Electrochemistry. • Acids and Bases. • Bonding theories. • Colligative properties. • Chemical bonding. • Descriptive inorganic chemistry. • Introduction to organic chemistry.

Learning outcomes
Having passed the course, the student is able to: • Describe the Periodic System and periodic variations in properties. • Describe the structure of atoms and molecules. • Understand the ideal gas Law and define partial pressure. • Apply fundamental thermodynamics, i.e. enthalpy, entropy, and free energy, to chemical reactions • Predict stoichiometry and balance reactions. • Describe and differentiate between various types of chemical bonds. • Calculate reaction orders, activation energies and the effect of catalysis. • Write the equilibrium constant and describe the content at chemical equilibrium. • Calculate pH in solutions of strong and weak acids and bases and puffers. • Calculate oxidation states and balance redox reactions. • Describe the most important types of organic compounds. • Describe the chemistry of coordination compounds • Show dexterity in the laboratory, carryout analysis and dissemination of results
Assessment method
To be allowed to sit the written examination: • Compulsory coursework must be handed in on time and assessed • Chemical engineering project passed A four-hour written examination. All auxiliary materials are allowed, e.g., textbooks, papers, notes. The final course grade is a weighted average of the exam mark (75%) and the average mark of the top 5 (of 7) exercises (25%). Re-exam: Earlier evaluated and accepted written coursework can be used for the re-exam.
