3175.23 - Structural analysis

Course number
3175.23
Title
Structural analysis
ECTS
7.5
Prerequisites
Mechanics
Purpose
The purpose of the course is to establish the student’s basic knowledge and capabilities in the field of structural analysis of typical structural members.
Content
The course is an introductory course to civil engineering, building further on mechanics through working with material properties of typical building materials, statics and analysis of simple structural elements.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, problem solving, group project work with gradual application of learning outcomes from lectures.
Learning outcomes
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: - Construct load combinations and determine actions according to Eurocodes 0 and 1. - Apply equilibrium equations to determine reactions in static systems. - Calculate member forces, stresses and strains in statically determinate truss structures. - Compute normal-, shear- and moment diagrams in statically determinate beam structures. - Use the principle of virtual work for the determination of reactions and section forces. - Determine deformations truss and beam structures by the principle of virtual work. - Determine moment of inertia for simple cross sections - Determine normal stresses in trusses and beams - Determine the load carrying capacity of columns - Calculate reaction forces and section forces in simple arches and cable structures.
