For students to acquire knowledge and competences in nursing supporting persons with acute and serious health conditions. For students to acquire knowledge about palliative nursing supporting persons receiving palliative treatment, as well as nursing supporting persons during terminally illness and at the time of death. For students to develop their academic approaches and working methods.

The contents of the theory component is: • Traumatology; head trauma, back trauma and bleeding • Exercises in EWS, ABCDE and ISBAR • Fluid and electrolyte treatment • Pathological prevention related to acute and serious illness, e.g. ascites, sepsis, anaphylaxis, ketoacidosis, delirium, fatigue and cachexia • Nursing patients who are acutely or seriously ill • Considerations in relation to communication with patients and next of kin, who are in crisis • Considerations in relation to informing, guiding and teaching patients and next of kin, who are in crisis • Grief, suffering, coping and hope during serious illness • Cancer patient treatment and nursing • Palliative nursing and hospice care • Enteral nutrition and enteral food • Oral care in case of stomatitis and mucositis • Oral screening • Academic writing • Qualitative research methods • Hermeneutics and phenomenology • Random and systematic e-search • Assessing scientific articles using a recognised formula • Psychology: Introduction to psychology, personality, stress, coping, loss, grief and crisis. • Ethics/Philosophy: Duty-based ethics, consequentialist ethics, virtue ethics. Palliation, death and euthanasia. Ethical values and workload. Moral stress and burnout. The contents of the clinical component in the practice lab is: • Based on a case provide nursing for acute and seriously ill patients • Practice skills in placing enteral tubes and in feeding via tube • Required study activity : o Assessing a case patient applying the ABCDE method

Theory component teaching and learning is organised as alternating lectures, dialogue, cases, group work and self-study. Clinical teaching and learning takes place in the skills lab, where students practice their skills based on cases. The portfolio is used as a tool in provision of care, reflections and assessment.

Students who successfully complete the module can demonstrate ability to: • Describe guidelines applicable to reception of persons with acute conditions • Explain pathological characteristics in relation to persons with acute or serious conditions • Explain pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics in relation to cancer treatment and life-saving treatment • Describe the characteristics of oral communication in acute situations (ISBAR) • Reflect on communication with patients, next of kin and practitioners in acute and serious situations • Explain selected interventions in relation to the physical, mental, social and existential/spiritual needs of patients with serious illness • Explain key concepts and theories in psychology • Explain selected crisis theory and potential coping methods used by persons with serious illness and their next of kin • Describe the concepts duty-based ethics, consequentialist ethics and virtue ethics • Reflect on ethical situations in acute and serious illness care pathways • Explain communication and welfare technology in acute and serious care and treatment pathways • Describe the theory of science foundation underpinning qualitative research methods emphasising hermeneutics and phenomenology • Assess qualitative data in relation to credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability • Assess research-based knowledge about nursing for persons with serious and acute conditions • Assess their own learning needs in relation to the course of study
