2139.14 - Social Theory
Students are required to hold an upper secondary education diploma or equivalent qualification.
The purpose is to provide students with an insight into classical and contemporary theories about society. The course will examine how important social issues are described in social theory, as well as in light of the history of social theory.
The subject is described using introductory literature, as well as selected original texts – both classical and contemporary. The subject is divided into topics, which are described theoretically and in light of the historical changes in theory.
Learning and teaching approaches
The duration of the course is ten three-hour sessions. The learning and teaching strategy combines lectures and active student participation.
Successful students can demonstrate ability to: - understand and communicate different types of social theory approaches and how these have changed as circumstances have changed - read and discuss selected theory texts - examine social concepts in a broader theoretical context.
Written assignment describing and analysing a selected topic. Oral examination based on this assignment and the course bibliography as a whole. The written assignment must not exceed 4000 words – excluding bibliography and footnotes.
