Purpose
Students obtain a general overview of Faroese church history and a deeper insight into a chosen period.
Content
The course will highlight 18. Century Pietism and Enlightenment as theological as well as political trends, their impact on western Christian society, and their influence on faith and church life in the Faeroes. Topics include: -churches: buildings, budgets, and liturgy -reading skills, school, and education -pastors and lay people -popular life of faith -reading and preaching: homilies, catechisms, hymnals Overviews of church history and dogmatic will alternate with analysis of contemporary sources in comparison with cultural and religious currents.
Learning and teaching approaches
12 x 3 lessons, adjusted to the church year and the workload of the pastors. Teaching will take place in lectures, discussions, group work, and presentations by the students.
Learning outcomes
Having completed the course the students will be able to: • identify and distinguish between the main currents within the Lutheran churches, predominantly in the 18. century, and appreciate their impact on Faroese church life • work on their own with various religious texts and use them critically as sources of church history • describe Faroese life of faith with examples from stories and religious poetry • discuss conflicts and cooperation between authorities, pastors, and lay people debate the Lutheran sermon as preached in the pulpit or repeated in reading and the advantages and disadvantages of these two sorts of preaching
