Practice Learning within the Master Learning Framework
Completion of the 1st and 2nd semester within the master’s learning framework or equivalent qualifications. The practical learning workplace must have at least two full-time employees. The practical learning workplace could be a company, an institution, an administration, a service firm, or a manufacturing business. The practical learning period must incorporate content of tangible academical relevance, and therefore a cooperative agreement with the workplace must be approved by a programme director or a supervisor.
The objective of practice learning is to broaden the academic work skills of the student and additionally create a connection between the degree and the labour market. This should encompass: • Making the students qualified for jobs in the field of study or theme they are working on within the master’s learning framework by applying theoretical knowledge in practice. • Create a connection between the university education and the Faroese or international labour market, including creating networks and contacts within the field for each individual student. • Nurture the analytical skills of the student through a practice-oriented and problem-based project. • Scientific workflow through a practice-oriented and problem-based project, where supervision and seminars aid this development.
The work placement period follows the academic year, and starts at either about September 1 and ends at January 1, or at about February 1 and ends at about June 1. These time periods are important for ensuring that the work placement period also follows the academic year.
Learning and teaching approaches
The Work at the Department of History and Social Sciences (DHSS) Ten days of the work placement period have been allocated to being present at the place of education. Attendance is compulsory for these days. A practical learning report will be made, i.e. an academic report based on the practice learning term. The work at DHSS is an academic assistance of the practice learning period work and with the practice learning report. This will be arranged in the form of, for instance, presentations with critical feedback and debate, seminars, and/or lectures. Students are required to present their work and to provide peer assessments. Individual guidance is provided by appointment with a programme director. In case of work placement abroad, special arrangements will be made as to how this will be organised (e.g. attendance via Skype or other means of communication). Work at the Practice Learning Workplace The practice learning work is based on a joint agreement between DHSS, the practice learning workplace, and the student. The objective of the agreement is to ensure that the student is doing academically relevant work by insight/assignments/analysis in the daily work of the place.
Learning outcomes
Based on a practice learning report: • Reflection on the practical experience the student has acquired in the practical learning period, including significant challenges and experiences seen from an academic point of view. • Critical reflection, theoretical and practical, in regards to the field of work or the job assignments of the student at the practice learning workplace. • Scientifically-based reflection on own practical learning term with a basis in a problem-oriented approach and independent work. • A problem-oriented analysis encompassing the field of study of the student and their particular interests, thereby eliciting new relevant knowledge.
Assessment method
Before the student may take their examination, they must have participated satisfactorily in the academic work at DHSS. This will be approved by a programme director or the relevant person in charge of the course. The assessment will be conducted with a basis in an overall assessment of the practical learning report and an oral examination.
Marking scale
The bibliography is individual and must describe concepts, theories, and methods of relevance for reflective, practical academic work. The practical learning report is customarily between 8,000 and 12,000 words long.
