#MeToo and literature (MA)

Students must have completed a BA in Faroese or hold an equivalent qualification. This course may also be completed as an individual course subject to other prerequisites (please refer to the Degree Programme in force).

For students to learn about the #MeToo movement and the core issues of the #MeToo struggle. Based on theory articles students will learn to analyse and interpret both older and more recent works of literature in light of #MeToo and critically assess these, as well as the theories on which the #MeToo movement is based in the academic context.

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, violence against women has become a subject of public conversation and is widely debated around the globe. This is reflected in recent literature. Violence against women is, however, no new phenomenon in society or literature. This course will examine how violence against women is reflected in Icelandic and Faroese literature. The course will discuss ballads and medieval texts, as well as contemporary literature. Articles on the theory in the field and on literary theory will also be part of the course reading list.

Lectures, student presentations and discussions.

Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: • explain the main traits and issues of the #MeToo movement • describe theories and concepts that are part of or relevant to the #MeToo movement, and relate these to literary texts • analyse and interpret literature based on perspectives and concepts that are associated with the #MeToo movement • critically assess the #MeToo movement and the theories that underpin it in the academic context.

Written 4-hour exam.
