1925.12 - Post-colonialism in Nordic Literature

Course number
1925.12
Title
Post-colonialism in Nordic Literature
ECTS
5
Content
The aim of the course is to discover, how Nordic colonialism is expressed in works of literature. During the Viking age Scandinavians colonised areas on the North Atlantic islands, later on Scandinavian countries had colonies both in and outside the Nordic area. The Faroe Islands and Greenland form the contemporary remains of Nordic colonialism which can be seen in older as well as in younger Nordic literature. The course investigates Danish, Faroese, Greenlandic, Icelandic and Norwegian works of literature; it works with post-colonial thoughts by Bill Ascroft et al., Benedict Anderson, Ulrich Bech, Homi Bhabha, Cresswell, Doreen Massey and Roland Robertson in order to promote the understanding of the Nordic area as a post-colonial space and give the students devices for analysing works of literature in this perspective.
