Prerequisites
BA in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
The student will acquire knowledge about older and newer research in language contact with special attention to the situation in the Faroe Islands.
Content
We will read The Dynamics of Faroese-Danish Language Contact (H. P. Petersen), and parts of Language Contact (Y. Matras). The students will furthermore read different recent and older articles about the topic, that is, articles about borrowing, convergence, code-switching, multilingualism in the Faroe Islands and so on. The student will be acquainted with newer and older research, and s/he must be able to understand the material and be able to work critical with it.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, presentations, group-work, discussions.
Learning outcomes
The students shall be able to work critical with the distributed material. S/he shall be able to estimate the material and use it in his/her further work with language contact. More specific: teaching, research and presenting the topic.
Assessment method
6 hours written exam. All notes and books are allowed. Re-examination: As the regular examination.
