  • Doctor of Philosophy, Electrical Engineering, Oct. 2006 – Dec. 2009, Newcastle University, UK.
I was a fulltime research student for one calendar year. After that I continued for another 2 years and 2 months part-time while working fulltime as Research Associate and Lecturer at Newcastle University and later as Associate Professor at DTU. My defence was on the 10th March 2010. My area of research was electrical machine design with particular emphasis on improving the efficiency of asynchronous machines.
  •  Master of Science, Electrical Power Engineering, Sept. 2004 – Aug. 2006, Newcastle University, UK.
I received the highest average mark at the university and was awarded with the Overseas Research Student (ORS) Award worth £ 27,000 and the Newcastle International Postgraduate Scholarship (NIPS) Award worth £ 9,000.
  • General Engineering, Aug. 2002 – June 2004, University of the Faroe Islands, Faroe Islands.
I studied general engineering and science while working full-time to supplement my marine engineering education and prepare for post graduate study.
  • Marine Engineering, Aug. 1997 – June 2000, Marine Engineering College, Faroe Islands.
I received the highest average mark ever given at the Faroese Marine Engineering College. The late Mærsk McKinney Møller greeted me in person during one of my final oral examinations.

Positions
  • Visiting Professor, Newcastle University, United KingdomJuly 2014 – July 2017
I was appointed Visiting Professor in recognition to my work with superconducting machines. In my role as Visiting Professor I give lectures, supervise researchers and collaborate on smaller and larger research projects.
  • Professor of Energy Engineering, University of the Faroe Islands, Faroe Islands Jan. 2014 – Present. We have decided to move back to our home country to try to make a difference. I am responsible for energy engineering research and education. I am responsible for building up B.Eng. and M.Sc. programs in energy engineering. I have attracted funding for 2 PhD projects.
  • Head of Research Group - Electric Components, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark March 2013 – March 2014.I was responsible for all personnel, budget and research involving electric components in power engineering. The group focused on: electrical machines, power electronics and high voltage. The group had 15 research staff. Additionally 5 technical and administrative staff were associated with the group. The annual budget was in the order of DKK 10 million.
  • Co-Founder, Owner and CEO, Defined Energy Ltd., Faroe Islands Dec. 2012 – Present. Defined Energy holds a patent for a device that recuperates heat from shower drain water, which can reduce the cost of showering by up to 70%. This is highly attractive to swimming pool operators, industrial laundries, hospitals, etc. I was approached by the inventor in late 2011 to take the patented invention from idea to product. I developed a business plan and pitched the idea to a group of investors. By late 2012 we had three investors who invested DKK 3 million and a limited company was established. The production site was and testing was completed by April 2014 and we had our first order in March 2014.
  • Associate Professor, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark Aug. 2009 – March 2014. (Responsible for electrical machines teaching and research). When I joined DTU, electrical machines were under-prioritised with very few students taking the course and no students taking projects in this field. During my time, DTU became a recognised international player in the field of electrical machines. Although my Danish industry network was non-existent when I moved to Denmark, I successfully managed to build this up and attracted DKK 24 mio. The funds were used to expand the electrical machines group from 1 employee in 2009 to 8 full time positions in 2014.
On the teaching side I was course responsible for three courses (Electrical Machines, Wind Turbine Electrical Design and Wind Turbine Technology and Aerodynamics). I received the “Best Teacher Award – Spring 2011” from DTU Electrical Engineering for Electrical Machines. In addition I contributed to the following courses: Electrical Energy Systems, Electrical Power Engineering Fundamentals and Stability and Control in Electric Power Systems. I supervised 8 PhD projects and more than 30 student projects at master and bachelor level. Most of the projects were in collaboration with Danish SMEs and larger companies such as: Sintex, Danfoss, Smedegaard Pumper, Dong Energy, Siemens Wind Power, Envision Energy, Priess, Maersk and Brüel & Kjær Vibro.
  • Lecturer and Teaching & Learning Leader, Newcastle University, United Kingdom Sept. 2008 – Jan. 2010. I was the Teaching and Learning Leader in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering responsible for initiating and implementing new teaching methods. I was course responsible for two bachelor courses on electromagnetic and electrical machines and one master course on advanced electrical machines. I was principle supervisor for 6 master projects and co-supervisor on 1 bachelor project. My research focus was on electrical machine.
  • Founder, Owner and CEO, Vind Ltd., Faroe IslandsJuly 2007 – Sept. 2009. I built up a company importing energy efficient building materials to Scandinavia from the UK. The strategy was to keep costs and investment at a minimum to limit risk and maximise profits. I sold the company when it was established and needed more resources to grow further.
  • Research Associate, Newcastle University, UK Sept. 2007 – Sept. 2008. I was based at Newcastle University where I carried out commercial research and development for a number of international companies, though mainly driven by Höganäs AB, Sweden. My area of focus was electromagnetic design of static and moving components, such as inductors and rotating machines. In this position I participated in commercial projects designing traction motors for mass production, for electric bicycles and traction motors for hybrid vehicles for Toyota. I also designed and developed inductors using a new isotropic magnetic material.
